It was created by Michael J. Bassett, based upon Treasure Island author Robert Louis Stevenson's novel of the same name. The story follows Captain Flint and his men as they fight for survival on a thriving island filled with treasure and rival pirates in the days leading up to the American Revolution. The third season ended on April 10, 2015 after twelve episodes. The series is set roughly two decades before the events of Treasure Island and in the same timeline as Stevenson's novel, with an introduction referring to "our world" in 18th century. Nearly all of the characters are new, with the exception of Ben Gunn (from Treasure Island), who does not appear. Black Sails is filmed in Cape Town, South Africa. The fourth season premiered on January 23, 2017. The season consisted of ten episodes, bringing the series to a total of thirty episodes. Series creator Michael J. Bassett is joined by authors Le Anne Lindsay and Toby Litt, who will serve as writers for the series. Lindsay will pen the ninth episode, while Litt will write the tenth episode. They join eight episode writers Jonathan Steinberg (Weeds) and Robert Levine (Children of Men). Craig Silverstein (Nikita) has also joined the production as co-executive producer along with producers Paul Giamatti (Sideways), Rick Yorn (The Hangover), Brian McGreevy (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and author/creator Jonathan E. Steinberg ('Weeds'). The third season began principal photography in Cape Town, South Africa on March 3, 2014. Shooting completed on April 5, 2014. Filming wrapped up for the third season with ten episodes. Shooting has begun for the fourth season in Cape Town, South Africa in January 2017 principal photography began on January 23 and is expected to run through mid-to-late February.Season 3 saw a huge strike by the actors due to low pay and social issues such as South African apartheid and land rights under white minority rule during the Apartheid era and ethnic and regional conflicts over race and religion in Southern Africa during that era.
