The movie Castigo Divino was released in 2005 and is a Spanish coming-of-age film about teenage love. The title translates to "Divine Punishment".Castigo Divino's story is told through the eyes of Alberto, a teenage boy growing up in Spain during the early 1940s. In his later years, Alberto becomes a historian of Nazi Germany, this being his way of dealing with what has been one of the most difficult experiences for him: falling in love with Carmen. Carmen is a young girl diagnosed with tuberculosis. Her father sends her to the country for treatment while he runs the family's vineyard in Tuscany, Italy. The two are forbidden from seeing each other, but they are able to communicate via letters which are later destroyed by their respective families.When the Germans arrive in Tuscany, Alberto tries to leave Italy with Carmen's father but is unsuccessful. Encouraged by his brother-in-law, Alberto takes on what he believes is an opportunity of a lifetime: delivery service for German officers in Florence. After his brother-in-law drinks too much at a party, Alberto takes his car to deliver a part of the German's order to Modena. He is stopped by an Italian officer who asks for identification. The officer makes Alberto drive him to Modena, leaving his brother-in-law behind in the middle of the woods without any identification. On the way there, Alberto realizes that he was set up by both his brother-in-law and the Italian officer.While in Modena, Alberto meets Pedro who offers him work at his uncle's farm in exchange for food and shelter. Pedro tells Alberto that he knows Carmen and that she is looking for him. When Alberto meets Carmen, he realizes that he has not only found the love of his life but also the woman responsible for saving him from being executed.Alberto is forced to leave Spain by the Nazis so that he can find Carmen once again. He eventually finds her hiding in a small town in southern Italy where she has moved to help her mother manage a house. They realize they cannot be together under the guard of the Italian Fascists so Alberto is forced to flee for their lives. He manages to smuggle Carmen and her mother out of Italy and make plans to go back with them as soon as possible. After saving Carmen from a German officer, however, Alberto knows that he must stay in Italy. He spends the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war and begs his friend Pedro to go back to Italy and help him find Carmen. Pedro agrees but Alberto finds out that Carmen's mother let her die as she enjoys living in Switzerland with Fernando, a doctor she meets there. Although Alberto is now alone, he remarries and raises a family with his wife. He eventually finds Carmen again but is unable to reconnect with her because his urologist brother-in-law is now married to her best friend Donna.
